Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel's story is about to be completely rewritten.
Insightful, bold, irreverent, and raw, The Fault in Our Stars is award-winning author John Green's most ambitious and heartbreaking work yet, brilliantly exploring the funny, thrilling, and tragic business of being alive and in love.
Some infinities are bigger than other infinities.
When I read the synopsis of John Green’s TheFault in Our Stars, I told myself I shouldn’t read it. You see, I was a pediatric oncology nurse. And I chose that profession because I lost a friend to cancer when we were just fourteen. Why on God’s green Earth would I want to read a book about two cancer ridden teens? I mean really, why? I work with these teens. I’ve held their hands and cried with them and their families, why would I read this book? The answer is simple….one of my patients, a tumor-ridden teen told me I should.
Hazel Grace is a teen who at thirteen was told she was dying of cancer, that was four years ago. At 17, her mom forces her to go to support group. There Hazel meets Augustus Waters, another teen who is in remission, in ore words he’s beaten cancer. Gus takes up with Hazel, and they become fast friends. I love their banter and deep discussions (though for teens, it is a little more sophisticated than a normal teen might talk). And I love their sweet whirlwind romance.Told from Hazel POV, the story revolves around her acceptance of her fate and making friends along the way.
I was blown away by the simplistic, beautiful bluntness of Green’s writing. I loved his characters dark Gallows humor and I loved how well he captured their hopes and fears. I feel this a must read for anyone and everyone, but make sure you have tissues!
