Mom-Top Ten

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. This feature was created because they are particularly fond of lists at The Broke and the Bookish. They’d love to share their lists with other bookish folks and would LOVE to see your top ten lists!

This week’s topic is very broad: “This week is all about music & books. We previously did books we’d give theme songs to so feel free to do that! Or 10 songs I wish that were books.” Two of my all-time favorite things in this life are books and music. I have always loved music, even taking piano lessons as a kid (albeit badly ?) So when I saw this topic I got excited. There are some really GREAT songs out there that could easily be the theme of a book or a book all by itself. I decided to go with songs that should be books. BUT not just any songs, Garth Brooks’ songs. I’ve always been a huge fan and seeing him in concert was like a dream come true. The man tells stories with his music so here are a few of my favorites. As always these are in no particular order.

Top Ten Garth Brooks’ Songs that Could Be Books

If Tomorrow Never Comes (Album: Garth Brooks)

This is such a sweet song, but could easily be a book. “Will she know how much I loved her?” If tomorrow never comes….I mean really, I could melt right there! But think about it: let’s take my favorite genre (dystopia) where tomorrow is never guaranteed wouldn’t this question run through your mind over and over and over?

Every Now and Then (Album: The Chase)

This song is for all those moments you wonder “what would’ve been” if things were different. A different choice, a different person, possibly a past love. How would things be different? What things from your past bring up those memories? That is this song and what a great book this could be….a girl thinking about an old high school flame but happy with her life now and realizing it through memories of her past.

Unanswered Prayers (Album: No Fences)

Have you ever prayed for something you thought you needed but got something, or in this case someone, else instead? I like this song as it reminds me that God knows best and while I may pray for something or someone God will answer me even if I don’t realize it at the time. In this song, the singer runs into an old flame with his wife and thanks God for not answering his prayer. The way I see it is God did answer his prayer by giving him exactly what he wanted in a woman who was better for him. I need this in a book ASAP!

Friends in Low Places (Album: No Fences)

The first guitar rift in this song is SO recognizable that just about everyone knows it. “I blame it all on my roots….” Here’s a broken hearted man showing up at ex’s wedding DRUNK. Talk about a nightmare for the bride. I could so see this as a book, man hits rock bottom and rises out of it.

The Thunder Rolls (Album: No Fences)

“A storm’s moving in….” A woman waits up in the early hours of the morning, her husband isn’t home yet and she knows where he is but “hoping she’s not right.” But she pulls a pistol and kills him for his infidelity. Ummm….dark, yes! But wouldn’t it make a great book?

Ain’t Going Down Til the Sun Comes Up (Album: In Pieces)

Every been a rebellious teen out with her boyfriend….breaking curfew? That is this song and it tells a story about a girl sneaking out with her boyfriend and partying til the sun comes up.

Callin’ Baton Rouge (Album: In Pieces)

Ever had a long distance? Ever wanted to call them every second of every day? What about a new relationship? This song is about a guy having a seemingly one night stand with a woman in Louisiana and he can’t stop thinking about her. Calls her at every stop. I could see this as a book.

Papa Loved Mama (Album: Ropin’ the Wind)

This is a truly sick song when you really think about it. Papa’s a truck driver, mama gets lonely. Papa comes home to find mama with another man and kills her in a fit of rage in front of the kids. Book please….what happened to the kids?

Send ‘Em On Down the Road (Album: Man Against Machine)

As a mama, this song wrecks me! “You can cry for ’em / Live and die for ’em / You can help them find their wings / But you can’t fly for ’em” It’s a song about raising your kids and letting them go. I can see this song being the inspiration for a young parent story or empty nester story. What do you think?

All American Kid (Album: Man Against Machine)

With the war in the middle east still going over a decade after it started, this song is fitting. It matches the mood of my home town and seeing people I went to high school with and (now kids younger than that) go fight and come home. But not all of them do. In this song, it follows one boy from becoming the high-school football star to signing up for the military to coming back home. I hear it and it gives me chills and the last line “This song is for those who never did come back all American kid.” Book in the making!!!

Your Turn! What songs would you turn into books?

So now that I’ve let the cat out of the bag with my Garth Brooks obsession ? it’s your turn. What songs would you turn into a book? Any songs inspire you to write? What about in reverse? Any books remind you of a song?
