Arlan Guthry hasn't got a chance

Dependable and solid, Arlan Guthry relishes his orderly life as a banker’s assistant in the small town of Hardman, Oregon. He has good friends, a great job, and the possibility of marriage to the town’s schoolteacher.

His uncluttered world tilts off kilter when the beautiful and enigmatic prestidigitator Alexandra Janowski arrives in town, spinning magic and trouble in her wake as the holiday season approaches.

Magic, humor, and heartwarming moments blend in this sweet holiday read.

The Christmas Calamity by Shanna Hatfield is the third book in her series Hardman Holidays. I adore this series. Each book can be read as a standalone, however I don’t recommend it. Characters from previous books are interwoven into the town and story. This installment is about Arlan Guthry, the junior partner at the bank, and Alexandra Janowski, a magician. Look no further for a little holiday magic than the town of Hardman.

I was really excited after reading the blurb to find that this book was about Arlan. He is one of my favorite characters of the series, and it was high time he got his happily ever after. Arlan works at the bank with Luke Granger (see his story in The Christmas Bargain). He’s kind and soft spoken. It isn’t until he meets Alexandra that we see a different side to him. He is quite passionate 😉

Alexandra is not at all who I’d have pictured with Arlan. She is a woman traveling on her own during a time that was frowned upon. When her wagon becomes inoperable, she is stuck in Hardman until it can be fixed. To make money, she takes a job as the town’s temporary schoolteacher. She’s spunky, outgoing, and not in the least bit shy. All of this serves her well as a magician. As a schoolteacher….not so much.

I really enjoyed The Christmas Calamity. As with each book in the series, I loved seeing the previous characters in this story settled into their own lives. Arlan and Alexandra’s relationship builds naturally, though I did find this story had a tiny bit more steam than the previous books. If you enjoy clean holiday romance, I highly recommend it.
