Down the TBR Hole #7

Posted March 13, 2021 by Lillian in Features / 2 Comments

Happy Saturday y’all! I took a few months off, but now I’m back and continuing my journey down the TBR hole this month. I think we’ve all been there at one point or another – Looking at our TBR, wondering what to read, and being completely overwhelmed at the sheer amount of books we have listed. As of writing this post, my current Goodreads TBR shelf has 362 books on it, my physical shelf and Kindle TBR shelf have more than I care to share at this time (mainly because I don’t want to count them 😅). Want to join me?

It works like this:

  • Go to your Goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 (or even more!) if you’re feeling adventurous) books. Of course, if you do this weekly (or monthly like me), you start where you left off the last time.
  • Read the blurbs of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

I will only being doing this once a month, typically the first Saturday. And I’m probably going to do 10 or more a month. I’m starting with my Goodreads TBR. I’d like to leave only books I plan to read on there and remove all the others. I started this journey on a TTT post. You can follow the journey here: Down the TBR Hole.

Shadows by Jennifer L. Armentrout

This is a prequel story to the Lux series, which I love, following Dawson Black’s story. One of these days I plan to do a reread of the Lux series, and when I do, I will start with this book.

Verdict: STAYS

The Scorpion Rules by Erin Bow

Having just reread the blurb, I cannot believe that I have NOT read this yet! This is right up my alley. I love sci-fi mixed with fantasy elements. We have a princess, an AI running the show, and a dystopian world at the bring of war. YES please! This one is moving up on the list.

Verdict: STAYS

Echoes by Laura Tisdall

I’m not really sure how this one ended up on my TBR to be honest. It’s a cyber-thriller, I believe, at least from reading the blurb. I’m not big on thrillers in general, and I’m not sure I’d ever read this and enjoy it. Just not for me.

Verdict: GOES

The Settling Earth by Rebecca Burns

This is a collection of short stories about British settlers to colonial New Zealand. I like colonial/time period historical pieces, so I’m not surprised to find this one on my list. However, I have zero interest in reading it now.

Verdict: GOES

The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielsen

I’m a sucker for royalty! I get thoroughly engrossed in fantasy that revolves around political intrigue. How I’ve not read this one yet is beyond me, but yay! I see that the series is now complete which means I can binge them soon 😉

Verdict: STAYS

Court of Fives by Kate Elliott

I’m not gonna lie, this one sounds amazing. BUT it also sounds like a lot of other amazing fantasy books I’ve already read. Because I don’t own a copy of this one and I have SO many others on my list right now, it’s going. BUT that doesn’t mean it won’t return at some point in the future 😉

Verdict: GOES

Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard by Rick Riordan

I’m tentatively keeping this one on the list. I love mythology books or books that tell a new story based on the old mythology, like this one. This one is Norse, which I happen to love. I haven’t read any of Riordan’s books before though. Where is a good place to start?

Verdict: STAYS

Legend by Marie Lu

How I haven’t read this one yet is beyond me. I love dystopias, especially dystopias based in real places. This one is based in the former United States. Also I feel like I’m one of the only people to have never read this one. I picked up a copy of the entire series last year when it was on a rare sale (actually all of Lu’s works were on sale that week, start of the pandemic and all).

Verdict: STAYS

The Seventh Hour by Tracey Ward

I love Ward’s Quarantine series so I’ve slowly bought up all of her books over the last few years. This one is a sci-fantasy set when the world’s rotation has slowed to a crawl, and people are just trying to survive. The story follows one girl who has never lived on land who suddenly has to find a way to survive there. It sounds like my kinda read.

Verdict: STAYS

Riders by Veronica Rossi

I loved Rossi’s Under the Never Sky. It’s one of my all-time favorite series. So her second series made it to my TBR. However, reading the blurb, I’m not sure it is something I’d enjoy. This one is about the four horsemen of the apocalypse and how their apocalypse fails. For now, it goes, however one of these days it may come back.

Verdict: GOES

Starflight by Melissa Landers

I love sci-fi. Typically, it is my go-to read and ranks right up there with royalty in fantasy. That’s why this one wound up on my TBR. However, reading the blurb, I’m not interested in reading it now. Though if you’ve read it and enjoyed it, it wouldn’t take much to convince me to leave it 😉

Verdict: GOES

The Mirror King by Jodi Meadows

So this is the second book in a duology about a young, outcast princess who is leading the charge to reclaim her throne. There’s one problem with her though. She has magic, and magic has been outlawed. I love the premise of this one. Since I haven’t read the first book yet. I’m removing this one from my TBR and replacing it with The Orphan Queen.

The Leaving Season by Cat Jordan

Occasionally I enjoy a contemporary YA which is prob why this one wound up on my TBR. I somehow got an ARC copy many moons ago and never got a chance to read it. So it stays, though I’m not sure when it will be read.

Verdict: STAYS

Traveler by Arwen Elys Dayton

I really enjoyed Seeker, which is why its sequel wound up on my TBR. I don’t know why I haven’t read it yet. In all honesty, I probably forgot about it and then it was way past release when I remembered it again. I’m excited to dive back into the world, and now the series is complete so I can binge them 😉

Verdict: STAYS

The Conqueror’s Wife by Stephanie Thornton

I enjoy a good historical fiction every so often. This one is based during the time of Alexander the Great. I still want to read this one. Now that I’ve jogged my memory about it, I wouldn’t be surprised if you see a review for it soon 😉

Verdict: STAYS

  1. I love this idea! Once I’m a little more disciplined with my blogging I may join you on this! I may start with my wish list first. Or make a different shelf for the books I own but am not as interested in. Ideas are brewing!

For the books you appraised I really liked The False Prince trilogy!
