Down the TBR Hole #11

Down the TBR Hole Meme

Down The TBR Hole is a meme originally created by Lia @ Lost in a Story that revolves around cleansing your TBR of all those books you’re never going to read and sort through it all to know what’s actually on there. Lia is no longer blogging, so Jody @ I’m Into Books has taken over. Be sure to join the linky on her site!

Happy Saturday y’all! I’m back and continuing my journey down the TBR hole this month. I think we’ve all been there at one point or another – Looking at our TBR, wondering what to read, and being completely overwhelmed at the sheer amount of books we have listed. As of writing this post, my current Goodreads TBR shelf has 338 books on it, my physical shelf and Kindle TBR shelf have more than I care to share at this time (mainly because I don’t want to count them 😅). Want to join me?

It works like this:

  • Go to your Goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 (or even more!) if you’re feeling adventurous) books. Of course, if you do this weekly (or monthly like me), you start where you left off the last time.
  • Read the blurbs of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

I will only being doing this once a month, typically the first Saturday. And I’m probably going to do 10 or more a month. I’m starting with my Goodreads TBR. I’d like to leave only books I plan to read on there and remove all the others. I started this journey on a TTT post. You can follow the journey here: Down the TBR Hole.

Book Cover for "The Midnight Star" by Marie Lu

The Midnight Star by Marie Lu

I absolutely adore this series. It’s an antihero story, which I love, and magic and dark fantasy all rolled together. I cannot believe, and am a little ashamed if I’m being honest, that I haven’t read the conclusion yet. I own the entire series and have every intention of finishing it one of these days…when I carve out some time.

Verdict: STAYS

Book Cover for "A Shadow Bright and Burning" by Jessica Cluess

A Shadow Bright and Burning by Jessica Cluess

This has been on my TBR ever since I first came across it, and it will remain until I get a chance to read it. I love historical fantasies, I love chosen one tropes which this one is a twisted version of it, and I love magical stories. What is not for me to love in this book?! I need to get my hands on a copy….

Verdict: STAYS

Book Cover for "Frost" by MP Kozlowsky

Frost by M.P. Kozlowsky

I remember adding this one to my TBR many years ago when it first came out. At the time (and still on occasions), I loved and devoured dystopians. This one not only has a zombie apocalypse, but also a robot who is the MC’s dad. Blending my love of post-apoc with sci-fi, how could I resist?!

Verdict: STAYS

Mercer Girls by Libbie Hawker

This is a historical fiction I picked up through Amazon’s Kindle First Reads program back before it was released. I have a soft spot for historical fiction (though I don’t read it nearly enough). This one is set in the aftermath of the Civil War and follows three women who leave the east for Seattle. It’s based partially in truth which is why I picked it out. One of these days I’ll finally get to it….

Verdict: STAYS

Exile for Dreamers by Kathleen Baldwin

What did I just say about having a soft spot for historical fiction? I have not read the first book of this series which is about a school for women training to be spies and assassins. Not going to lie, it sounds interesting and definitely my cup of tea. However, since I haven’t read the first one, it’s not staying.

Verdict: GOES

The Geek’s Guide to Unrequited Love by Sarvenaz Tash

I know exactly why I added this one to my TBR: comic con reference and geeky romance. It is my own love story with my husband 😉 However, as much as I enjoy a good contemporary romance every now and then, this one just isn’t as appealing as it was when I added it all those years ago. Maybe one day, but for now I’ll pass….

Verdict: GOES

The Fixer by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

On very rare occasions, I get in the mood for a thriller or suspense. But that is VERY rare. I prefer to find my suspense and thrills in sci-fi and fantasy. So I’m not sure how this one wound up on my TBR. It sounds good, don’t get me wrong. It’s just not my thing.

Verdict: GOES

Book Cover for "Renegades" by Marissa Meyer

Renegades by Marissa Meyer

I purposely put off reading this one until the series was complete. Why? Because I could not handle the cliffhangers this author likes to throw at us and I’m impatient for the next book 😂 Thankfully this is September’s #COYER book club pick for YA AND it also happens to be the Can You Read a Series in a Month challenge as well SO guess what I’m reading 😀

Verdict: STAYS

A Robot in the Garden by Deborah Install

I am pretty sure this one wound up on my TBR because I received it as a review book. If I remember correctly, I’ve attempted to read it a few times….and it is still on my TBR shelf so that should give you a clue to my feelings on it. It’s quirky, which I like and as I’m getting older find I like even more so maybe it’s time to give this one another shot….

Verdict: STAYS

Magruder’s Curiosity Cabinet by H.P. Wood

Remember what I said about historical fiction? Yeah, that applies here. I added this one for it’s comparison to Water for Elephants which I loved. One of these days I’ll carve out some time to delve into this one….

Verdict: STAYS

Holding Up the Universe by Jennifer Niven

A copy of this book landed in my hands a few years ago when it was added to my TBR list. I don’t remember where it came from or how I picked it up. The blurb sounds interesting. It’s essentially a YA contemporary with a touch of romance. BUT that isn’t really something I enjoy on a regular basis so for now it goes.

Verdict: GOES

Wanderlost by Jen Malone

Another YA contemporary romance on my TBR, but this one will be staying. I love road trips, I love travel in books, I love everything about this blurb. This one I will be reading. I don’t know when, but I will be making time for it at some point….

Verdict: STAYS

The Gilded Cage by Lucinda Gray

I did not remember adding this one to my TBR, but after reading the blurb, I know why. I like historical mysteries with a touch of romance which this one is supposed to be. Though, looking through the reviews, it doesn’t look like one I’d enjoy. So for now, it goes. Maybe one day I’ll reconsider….

Verdict: GOES

Neverland Evermore by Sarah J. Pepper

I don’t remember adding this one, but I can guarantee it’s because of the Neverland link. I’m a sucker for all things Peter Pan. This is an adult fantasy romance, which to be honest I didn’t read much of when I added it to my TBR, but it’s my main go-to read now. Plus this one is in KU so I think I’ll keep it around.

Verdict: STAYS

P.S. I Like You by Kasie West

This one has been on my TBR for a while (actually several of West’s books are on my TBR), and I’m happy to report that it is my next read 😀 We are reading it as our last buddy read of our Summer of Love event. Yay!

Verdict: STAYS
