Books of My Heart is hosting a year long read-along of the Night Huntress world books by Jeaniene Frost. COYER has adopted the read-along this year and is hosting chats for each book. You can see the schedule by clicking here. This is my first time reading the series though Halfway to the Grave has been sitting on my TBR shelf since it first came out. I’ve always enjoyed paranormal romance / urban fantasy, and vampires hold a soft spot for me. I’m excited to dive in. I’ll be posting reviews for each book the Friday before the chats. If you’d like to join us, find our group on Facebook here.

Dating the Prince of Darkness has its challenges....
Leila's psychic abilities have been failing her, and now she isn't sure what the future holds. If that weren't enough, her lover, Vlad, has been acting distant. Though Leila is a mere mortal, she's also a modern woman who refuses to accept the cold-shoulder treatment forever - especially from the darkly handsome vampire who still won't admit that he loves her....
Like choosing between eternal love and a loveless eternity....
Soon circumstances send Leila back to the carnival circuit, where tragedy strikes. And when she finds herself in the crosshairs of a killer who may be closer than she realizes, Leila must decide who to trust - the fiery vampire who arouses her passions like no other or the tortured knight who longs to be more than a friend? With danger stalking her every step of the way, all it takes is one wrong move to damn her for eternity....
Continuing this month with the second book in Vlad’s series, Twice Tempted by Jeaniene Frost is an exciting thrill from start to finish. It picks up roughly 6 weeks after the events of book one. Here’s your warning, there are spoilers ahead for book one. If you haven’t read it and want to avoid spoilers, skip to the last paragraph 😉
Leila is still living with Vlad and now sharing his bedroom. The two are on uneven footing. Leila realizes she loves him and refuses to accept any less from Vlad, and Vlad has already said he refuses to love anyone again even her. At a stalemate and with the danger gone, Leila decides to leave and return to her life with Marty and the circus. However, not all is at it seems. After an attempt on her life, Leila finds herself with Vlad’s second hand vamp and on the run. Who is out to kill her this time, and could it really be the spurned vampire she left behind?
I really enjoyed the quick pace of this one. It starts on page one and does not stop for anything. This made it a quick and enjoyable read for me. I found myself reading much quicker than I anticipated and blowing past my friends who I was buddy reading with. The action is truly what drives this book. There is something new every time you turn the page. So much so that I had to go back and look to see how much time had passed. Poor Leila is really put through the wringer in less than a week!
While I loved the fast pace, I was really disappointed in the story itself. There is little growth for Leila or Vlad as much of the book is devoted to the action that takes place. As a result, it felt redundant, and I had a sense of deja vu as some scenes and instances played out similarly to how they occurred in book one. There really isn’t much new introduced into the world that we don’t already know from Cat’s story, and I feel like if you are new to the Night Huntress World, you’d be lost.
Overall, Twice Tempted kept my attention, and despite being slightly disappointed in the story after it was over, I really enjoyed it while reading. Vlad is still my favorite vamp, and I’m holding on to hope that we will eventually get some chapters from his perspective. I love Leila, I think I even like her more than Cat (especially in the beginning). If you are a fan of urban fantasy and paranormal romance, I highly recommend it.
*I buddy read this one with Berls @ Because Reading, Anne @ Books of My Heart, and Brandee @ (un)Conventional Bookworms. Anne and Brandee rated this one 3.5 stars while Berls rated it 2.5-3 stars.
