In 2023, Books of My Heart is hosting a read-along of the Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne. COYER has adopted the read-along this year and is hosting chats for each book. You can see the schedule by clicking here. This is my first time reading the series though I’ll admit that I’ve attempted the first book once before. Urban fantasy is one of my favorite genres, especially when the world contains lots of paranormal characters. I’ll be posting reviews for each book the Friday before the chats. If you’d like to join us, you can find our group on Facebook here.

Atticus O’Sullivan, last of the Druids, doesn’t care much for witches. Still, he’s about to make nice with the local coven by signing a mutually beneficial nonaggression treaty - when suddenly the witch population in modern-day Tempe, Arizona, quadruples overnight. And the new girls are not just bad, they’re badasses with a dark history on the German side of World War II.
With a fallen angel feasting on local high school students, a horde of Bacchants blowing in from Vegas with their special brand of deadly decadence, and a dangerously sexy Celtic goddess of fire vying for his attention, Atticus is having trouble scheduling the witch hunt. But aided by his magical sword, his neighbor’s rocket-propelled grenade launcher, and his vampire attorney, Atticus is ready to sweep the town and show the witchy women they picked the wrong Druid to hex.
What a ride! Hexed by Kevin Hearne is the second adventure in The Iron Druid Chronicles which follows Atticus O’Sullivan, the last iron druid, as he attempts to live a peaceful life in the hills of Arizona. This book picks up not long after the events of book one, so there may be some minor spoilers to that book in this review. Atticus’s former quiet life has been given a new purpose after the events of the last book. A swath of land killed by the overuse of magic requires his care and attention, he’s picked up an apprentice, the witches are asking for a truce, and now a horde of Bacchants has invaded his town.
The story opens a week or so after the events of book one. Atticus is still recovering from his use of magic during the battle, two goddesses are vying for his attention, and now he’s being magically attacked. The question is by whom. The action never stops nor does it get dull. It is constantly moving, constantly flowing. When one thing stops, another takes its place. As a reader, you almost feel bad for Atticus because so much is happening. It’s hard to believe it all occurs over the course of a week!
Like book one though, I was left slightly disappointed in Atticus as a character. I still don’t know him; I didn’t learn anything new either. I did love seeing his interactions with his neighbor, Mrs. MacDonagh, and Granuaile. These characters have come into Atticus’s life at a time when he’s forgotten what it means to be human. He’s spent years blending in, and now he actually cares for someone other than himself. Oberon is still fantastic and my favorite!
Overall, I enjoyed Hexed. The fast pace held my attention, and the set up for the next novel has me intrigued. Highly recommend for fans of urban fantasy.
*I buddy read this one with Berls @ Because Reading, Anne @ Books of My Heart, Brandee @ (un)Conventional Bookworms, and Stephanie @ Once Upon a Chapter who all gave it 4.5 stars.
I’m also reading this series as part of the read-along and it’s my first time reading them. So far I’m really enjoying Atticus’s antics.

This isn’t really my type of read, although the covers that are at the top in the banner might have gotten me a little more interested if I’d seen them first, lol. The read-along idea is fun, I just am so weird about reading what I want to read or have to read for review/tours that I can’t ever seem to join in.
