Ellie’s Sweet 16 is a summer of firsts.
First car.
First kiss.
First boyfriend.First serial-killing stalker…?
Hockey-obsessed tomboy Eleanor Westley has never been the object of a guy's affection before. So when the hottest boy she's ever seen moves in across the street and starts treating her like she's the center of his universe, naturally she's going to be a little skeptical. But everything starts to make sense when girls who look just like Ellie start dying all around the city. Obviously the new guy is the killer, and of course he only likes her because he wants to slice her into tiny pieces. Right?
The more Ellie gets to know Seth the more she's convinced he's a psychopathic killer. Problem is, he's the sweetest psychopathic killer she's ever met. Not to mention he's brutally hot. No matter how hard she tries, she can't help but fall for him.
From the best selling young adult author of The Avery Shaw Experiment and V is for Virgin, comes a lovable, quirky, and wildly funny coming of age contemporary romance about a girl, her strange but hot neighbor, and the crazy summer that changed both of their lives forever.
Will Ellie find true love?
Or will her summer of firsts turn out to be a summer of lasts?
Kelly Oram never ceases to amaze me! Every time I think I’ve found my favorite book of hers, I read another and think “This is the best thing ever!” which is EXACTLY what happened while reading Serial Hottie. This is an older Oram book, published in 2012, but it was my first time reading it. Let me just tell you something: I was skeptical. How was my favorite author of quirky, fun romance going to pull off a psychological murder mystery? By adding her own brand of quirky characters and a touch of romance to the thriller that’s how!
Ellie is a memorable, fun character. She’s a tomboy through and through, yet in the summer she turns 16, she finds herself at the crossroads of womanhood. She’s battling her desire to play street hockey with ogling the new boy next door. As her feelings….erhm….hormones begin guiding her actions, the confident tomboy becomes the socially awkward shy girl. This is new territory that she’s never had to navigate before and I loved how the author brought the readers into Ellie’s struggles.
Seth *sigh* Seth is, according to Ellie and her sister, hot with a capital H. He is everything the boys at their school aren’t. AND he works out shirtless in his open garage every morning so the girl’s can spy on him. Yet there’s something off about the cute boy. He’ even more socially awkward than Ellie AND with a serial killer on the loose killing girls that fit Ellie’s description, well you see where this is going.
Overall I loved the story! I started it with the intention of reading a few chapters a week as part of a group buddy read, but wound up staying awake until 3 in the morning to finish it. Who needs sleep when there is a killer on the loose?! Kelly Oram put just the right amount of suspense to keep me turning the pages and left enough mystery surrounding Seth that she had me guessing until the end who the killer would be. AND guys…..I was surprised!!!! For the first time in a long while, I didn’t guess right! Big kudos to the author for keeping me on my toes! If you enjoy quirky romance and are looking for a little suspense, I highly recommend you dive into Serial Hottie asap. You won’t regret it.
