Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together
Happy Tuesday y’all! This week’s topic is “Books I’ve Read That I’d Like In My Personal Library.” I pretty much buy books in hardcover if I plan to reread them, or if I find them on sale, or if the cover is really pretty. Y’all I say this because I literally cannot think of a single book for this week’s topic. As a result, I’m going to do last week’s topic which was “Favorite Tropes.” Tropes are commonly used theme or plot devices. I personally had never really considered what tropes I enjoy until recently. I noticed a trend in what I enjoy, especially when it comes to contemporary romance, though some of it applies to fantasy/sci-fi as well. Below is a list of my favorite tropes, in no particular order. As always, covers/titles link to Blog/Goodreads/Amazon(aff).
Favorite Tropes
Soul Mate/Fate: I love this trope. Not the insta-love kind of soulmates, but the ones that are drawn to each other and slowly fall in love. You know the kind where they fit together like a puzzle piece. You can’t have one without the other.
Second Chance at Love: One of my all-time favorite contemporary romance tropes! I love second chance love stories. Just about all the contemporaries I read have this trope. I can’t get enough of it!
Good vs. Evil: This is a classic fantasy trope, and it’s a classic because it works. I love the whole good vs. evil. I like it even more when the author explores the gray area between them and you find yourself stuck, unable to choose a side.
Pseudo-European Medieval Setting: Just about all of YA fantasy has a pseudo-European setting, and that’s ok. I love it. I love reading a story that feels like it is set in this world, but clearly has its own culture and magic.
Space Pirates: I love space operas, but I especially love pirates in space. Blame it on my Firefly obsession, but I can’t get enough of this trope.
Parallel Worlds: I really like this trope. I like the different worlds, and I especially like it when the author explores how those different worlds affect the characters.
AI Uprisings: This is a relatively new trope for me. But my sci-fi heart is in love with it! iRobot has nothing on these. And y’all for the most part these AI aren’t necessarily uprising so much as just asserting their independence 😉
Dystopian Governments: My first love. I’m obsessed with dystopias and have been since I read Matched years ago. It’s interesting reading the different ways these governments come about. Here are a few of my favorites:
After the Apocalypse: In addition to dystopias, I’m in love with post-apocalyptic books. I can’t get enough of them! I like the resilence of the human race, and I especially enjoy reading different authors’ views of what will cause the apocalypse.
Time Travel: Last but certainly not least is time travel. This trope is one of my favorite sci-fi, and typically it crosses over with one or more of the above tropes. I like the time travel that goes back or forward. Really it doesn’t matter to me, it’s just fun!

I love the Parallel Worlds trope, too. There’s so much that can be done with it.

OMG, I love all those tropes as well. The Selection is a personal favorite as well as Rhapsodic. ::sigh:: such a great list, I’m gonna have to check out Second Star and Sorcery of Thorns

Second Star is so good!! A little slow to start but I love the Peter Pan tie-in.
Yeah…I initially was struggling with this topic myself. As I buy all my books 90% of the time! It’s rare when I receive a book from a publisher and it’s a finished copy! If it’s an ARC, I’m still likely to buy the final copy if it was a winner–and 95% of them are winners! Lol. Maybe even 97%…
But then I realized I had at least 10 if not more books I read that I still need copies of…though if you’ve already stopped by you know I’m kind of stretching that truth, but truth it is!!! Lol.
Great tropes too! I agree with these as well, though with the space like setting it’s a little more hit or miss, but I’ve been finding good ones lately, so maybe my days of “miss” are over now!
Here’s my Tuesday Post
Have a GREAT day!

I agree with getting complete copies. I usually buy the ones I plan to reread or I really loved. I’m definitely a book hoarder 😂
I had a hard time with this topic, too, because really I just want to own ALL THE BOOKS. I went with a twist on the prompt instead.
I’m with you — even after reading dozens of them, I love dystopian/post-apocalyptic books. I also enjoy a good second chance romance. Also, good vs. evil because that’s just a classic setup that always resonates with me.
Happy TTT!
