TTT #153 – Ten Releases I’m On The Fence About

Posted February 5, 2019 by Lillian in Features / 7 Comments

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together

Happy Tuesday y’all! This week’s topic is “Upcoming Releases I’m On the Fence About.” After my terrible reading year, I’m still trying to get my book mojo back. It’s coming, it’s just slow. As a result, I’m finding that I’m more picky about the books I chose to read. Here are ten upcoming releases I’m on the fence about, in no particular order. As always, covers/titles link to Blog/Goodreads/Amazon(aff).

Top Ten Releases I’m on the Fence About

Once & Future by Amy Rose Capetta & Cory McCarthy: This is a gender-bent retelling of King Arthur. Sounds amazing right?! I’ve been excited for it for a while, but the early reviews are mixed with most being negative. Now I’m not so sure…..

The Beautiful by Renée Ahdieh: I think I’m one of the only YA book bloggers that hasn’t read Ahdieh yet. I have all her books, I just need to make time. The reason this one makes the list….vampires. Vampires are making a comeback, and well I’m not so sure how I feel about that. I mean I kinda got my fill of them with Twilight

Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim: I’m really town over this one. On one hand, it’s a Mulan-retelling. On the other hand, the blurb uses Project Runway as a descriptor *gag*

The Fever King by Victoria Lee: I’m not really sure how I feel about this one. It’s a YA dystopia that seems to be a futuristic retelling of the current political climate in the US. Y’all I read to get away from the real world problems.

Crown of Coral and Pearl by Mara Rutherford: This is a debut novel and I am always for reading new authors. Yet this seems like one of read a gazillion times already. Younger sister thrust onto throne and now set to wed a mean prince who may be more than he seems….I don’t know. I’m just not sure about it….

The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon: I’m a sucker for fantasy, especially epic fantasy. I have never read this author before though, and well I’m ashamed to say that the 893 page count has me balking.

Undying by Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner: Speaking of needing more YA scifi 😉 I didn’t love Unearthed so I’m not sure about continuing the series. I’m still thinking about that awful cliffhanger ending which makes me want to pick this up, but then again I remember how I had to force myself to read Unearthed and that also doesn’t have me reaching for a copy of the sequel.

Never-Contented Things by Sarah Porter: I did not like The Cruel Prince, I DNFed that sucker around the halfway mark (though I’m thinking about picking it up again). However, this one sounds promising and the reviews specifically say that it is not The Cruel Prince SO maybe….

Dream Keeper by Amber R. DuellI’m really torn over this one. I like the idea of a Sandman retelling, but I’m not sure about the dark overtones. I like dark fantasy as much as the next girl, BUT this one has a warning in the blurb which makes me pause.

Second Star by J.M. Sullivan: So I actually have an eARC of this one and so I know I will read it. I’m just a little hesitant. At first I was really excited. I mean who doesn’t love a Peter Pan reimagining?! BUT I’m not sure how I feel about it, having read the blurb a little closer. The Shadow is the big bad….ummm Once Upon a Time anyone? Or is it just me?

    • The reviews are SO mixed. Some love it and some hate it. It seems there’s no middle ground on Once & Future. I’m hesitantly excited about vampires making a comeback. I agree! Hope they are scarier than Twilight 😉

    • Right?! I mean it doesn’t sound terrible, it just sounds like every other YA dystopian out there. I think I’m a little burnt out on dystopians for now though….

I love Samantha Shannon but even I have to admit, the 800+ page count of Priory almost had me turned off, luckily the book sounds amazing and I know I like her work because for any other author that page count would be a dealbreaker. I’m intrigued by Spin The Dawn, I think the comps were really interesting.
