TTT #188 – Valentine’s Edition

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together

Happy Tuesday y’all! This week’s topic is “Love Freebie.” The last two years I’ve focused on couples (favorite YA fantasy couples and favorite fictional couples). This year I’m going to give some love to those characters you just can’t help loving….even when you really shouldn’t. Here are my favorite top ten hate to love characters, in no particular order. As always, covers/titles link to Blog/Goodreads/Amazon(aff).

Please note that there may be minor spoilers ahead. Read at your own risk!

My Top Ten Hate to Love Characters

Jordan from Dark Angel by Hanna Peach: This series is one of my favorites, and Jordan is one of the characters I really wanted to hate. He gets in the way of the main character’s love interest. He’s a hurdle that has to be crossed, yet I wound up falling in love with him, maybe even shipping him a little, and definitely heartbroken over him.

The Man in the Suit from The Unearthly by Laura Thalassa: Okay there truly isn’t much I can say about this character. He is the villain of the series. You are supposed to hate him. Why then do I love him SO much?! What does that say about me?! I can’t even reveal his real name here (because SPOILERS)….but I love him. He makes the main character question everything, even who she may or may not love. And y’all I’m ashamed to say I wanted her to love him.

Aric from The Arcana Chronicles by Kresley Cole: I’m woefully behind on this series (Dead of Winter was the last one I read). I love Aric though. And I’m not sure I’m supposed to. I mean he’s kinda the villain at first. But as his story unfolds, I see it more like he’s lonely and I just love him. He gives up a lot for Evie and I will so go down with this ship! #TeamDeath

Morpheus from Splintered by A.G. Howard: Oh Morpheus! I love him. He represents the caterpillar from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. However his role left me conflicted throughout the series. I wasn’t sure if I wanted him to wind up with Alyssa, and when I did root for him, I felt guilty because of the other guy (who I will not name, because Morpheus is the ship I will sink with!).

Scouvrel from Fae Hunter by Sarah K.L. Wilson: I’m conflicted. I *think* Scouvrel will be a good guy or fae or whatever. You get the picture 😉 Scouvrel is introduced later in the book so I don’t want to give too much away. However he is a fae, and fae are twisted creatures who you can’t trust. Scouvrel though makes some decisions that make me think otherwise. I’m loving him, and I love how conflicted I am over him too.

Ryland from Imdalind by Rebecca Ethington: My Ryland 💔 This boy will steal your heart, break it, and then try to piece it back together. He is broken in so many ways throughout the series that your heart will ache for him. I love him, I hate him, and I hate that I love him.

Brennus from The Premonition series by Amy A. Bartol: This whole series has me torn, but Brennus is one pro for the series. He is a character that will leave you so conflicted. I love him. He knows what he wants and he will stop at nothing to get it. This determination and gradual softening of his character got him on this list. I love him and I really hate that I do because he isn’t a nice guy. Seriously though, can you have Stockholm syndrome for a character? If so, he fits the bill.

Cardan from The Folk of the Air by Holly Black: I have not read The Queen of Nothing yet so PLEASE don’t ruin it for me in the comments 😉 Cardan is a fae so I don’t know which way this will fall. I wanted to hate him at first, but then the more that was revealed, the less I hated him. I even started to love him a little. I still don’t trust him though, and I love that.

Misha from Storm and Fury by Jennifer L. Armentrout: Misha is one of those characters that I don’t think I’ll ever forget. Trinity’s bond and love for him made me love him. And then everything that happens in the story….y’all I’m intentionally being vague because I don’t want to spoil anything. I’ll just say I love him and I hate him for making me love him. He broke me!

Cole from The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken: I was genuinely surprised at how much I love the eldest Stewart. Cole is an enigma. He pushes Ruby to embrace her power and teaches her to use it. He becomes a rock for her when she feels she can’t trust anyone. Cole isn’t at all what I expected when his character was first introduced in the series, but I fell in love with him all the same.

  1. OOoh nice topic and choices!! I ADORE Aric!! Omg, you need to get caught up on the series! I swear to god, it’s the ONLY love triangle where I find myself utterly conflicted! Just as I think I chose “my guy” I end up switching because of events, but then I find myself switching back again by the next book! Both guys are so incredible amazing and infuriating! I think I might have been on the other guy’s team…because my mind is a total blank right now because Aric upset me but I still loved him. I was just hurt. I am realllllllllly hoping the final book releases this year because I am aching for it badly!

    Here’s my Tuesday Post
