What happens when three women discover , thanks to the live tweeting of a disastrous date, that they've all been duped by the same man? They become friends of course!

Samiah Brooks never thought she would be 'that' girl. But a live tweet of a horrific date just revealed the painful truth: she's been catfished by a three-timing jerk of a boyfriend. Suddenly Samiah - along with his two other 'girlfriends', London and Taylor - have gone viral online. Now the three new besties are making a pact to spend the next six months investing in themselves. No men, no dating, and no worrying about their relationship status...

For once Samiah is putting herself first, and that includes finally developing the app she's always dreamed of creating. Which is the exact moment she meets the deliciously sexy, honey-eyed Daniel Collins at work. What are the chances? When it comes to love, there's no such thing as a coincidence. But is Daniel really boyfriend material or is he maybe just a little too good to be true?

This one has been sitting on my shelf for a while now, so I was happy to learn it was picked as June’s #COYER book club adult read. The Boyfriend Project by Farrah Rochon is a contemporary romance about a woman who falls for her coworker who happens to have a big secret. Samiah Brooks is currently ruling the tech world and quickly moving up the ladder at her company. She’s highly intelligent, so it comes as a surprise when she becomes the victim of a catfishing scheme. The only upside to this is she makes two new friends, Taylor and London, who also fell for the scheme. The three make a pact to swear off boys for at least six months while they focus on themselves. For Samiah, she thinks this will be a walk in the park. Then her new coworker walks in.

Samiah is a force to be reckoned with, like “I am woman, hear me roar” kind of woman. She’s fiercely loyal, competitive, and highly motivated. She loves her job and hates attention so this whole thing with her ex Craig that gets blown up all over the internet makes her cringe. She finds solace in her work and her new friends. With the pact they make, Samiah finds time to work on her dream project, an app that is to help people connect with other like-minded people, essential an app to find friends. However, Daniel proves to be an obstacle.

Daniel Collins is an undercover agent who works for a division of the treasury department, locating and busting financial fraud cases. He’s just been assigned to Trendsetters, the tech company Samiah works for. The attraction is instant, and while he tries to fight it, he doesn’t fight too hard. He’s attracted to Samiah, and the more he gets to know her the more he can’t resist her. BUT his job comes first, and he cannot jeopardize the case.

I really struggled with this one, even setting it down and thinking I was going to DNF it. I didn’t buy into the romance at all. It was more insta-lust than love. The saving grace of the book was Samiah’s relationships with Taylor and London, the other two women conned by Craig. I liked how they met and how the author set up the story. But beyond that the characters were flat and the romance just didn’t hit the way I thought it would.

Overall, The Boyfriend Project was an okay read for me. I did switch to audiobook after the first 20% and enjoyed the narrator. Even so, to finish the book I listened at 2.5x speed. I think this may have been a case of “it’s me not you.” It just didn’t work for me.
