The all-knowing semelees swirled around me in the Veiled Between, crooning and writhing. “You’ve come to us, Daughter of Darkness, Princess of Shadows. Tell us what you seek.”

On the Silten continent, I’m the only fae who can walk the Veiled Between. My rare power is immense and dangerous, so the authorities have entrusted me to my guardian who controls my potent magic with an enchanted device.

To avoid the device’s searing punishment, I submit to a dutiful life. Until one terrifying night everything changes.

I’m taken captive by the ruthless Dark Raider—an outlaw wanted in all four kingdoms, who hides behind a mask, and has a body created for sin.

But the Raider whispers a promise I can’t resist—use my magic to find who he seeks, and he’ll obliterate my chains.

Finally, the freedom I’ve craved is within my reach.

Yet finding who he hunts plunges me into a game of deceit among the kingdoms. After uncovering truths I was never meant to know, I’m caught in a web of betrayal, and if I can’t find a way to break free, I’ll have simply traded one imprisonment for another.

Kingdom of Faewood is book one in Fae of Woodlands & Wild, a fae fantasy romance trilogy that takes place in Krista Street's Supernatural World. This series contains slow-burn spicy romance, epic worldbuilding, a female fae who's determined to wield her own fate, a ruthless Dark Raider who will stop at nothing to get what he wants, and a mysterious ploy circulating throughout the kingdoms.

This is the first time I’ve read this author, and it will not be the last. Kingdom of Faewood by Krista Street is the first book in her romantasy series Fae of Woodlands & Wild. This is set in Street’s Supernatural World, but it is not necessary to read any prior books before reading this story. Elowen is a lorafin, a fae who can walk between worlds and search the veil between. Her powers are rare and coveted making her very existence dangerous. Believing her family abandoned her when she was young, Elowen is the under the care of another fae and deemed “unsafe” to have full control of her magic until she reaches thirty. Because of this, she wears a magical collar that suppresses her magic, only allowing her access to it when her guardian deems fit. When she is taken by the Dark Raider, Elowen learns that the life she thought she knew may not be true.

I devoured this book! Elowen is naive, only knowing what her guardian has allowed her to know. She doesn’t realize that she is basically a slave to him, using her powers for his gain. When Jax, the Dark Raider, kidnaps her, he makes a promise to free her of her collar if she will do a calling (this is what her powers are called) for him. Unsure of what to do or who she can trust, Elowen feels the only thing she can do is go along with Jax.

Jax is an enigma. On one hand, Elowen can’t trust him. He kidnapped her and took her from the only family she’s ever known. On the other, he is kind, has never given her a reason to think he’d harm her, and seems geniune. To me, Jax and his merry males remind me of Robin Hood. He is wanted throughout the four fae kingdoms, he is feared, he steals from the rich and gives to the poor. But he is hiding a big secret, one that threatens to shatter what little goodwill he’s built with Elowen.

The story follows Elowen’s adventure from her kidnapping to her attempts at escape as she crosses the four kingdoms with a group of bandits feared throughout the land. At times, it’s exciting and thrilling. At others, it is dark and heartbreaking. The author totes this as a slow burn, and y’all it is. It is the slowest burn I’ve read in a while, but that just amps up the tension. If you are looking for spice, there is none here, however from reading others reviews who have read her previous books, it’s coming 😉

Overall, I really enjoyed Kingdom of Faewood. I’m fascinated with the world building, and now knowing there are other books in the same world, I’ll be reading them soon. While Elowen’s naivety wore on me slightly, it helped to build the story and create the world as what she is experiencing is all new to her as well. I loved the tension and the slow burn. I cannot wait to see what comes next. And that ending 🤯 Thankfully book two comes out in a few weeks because that cliffhanger is brutal! If you are a fan of fantasy with a touch of romance and adventure, I highly recommend it.
