Merry Mondays is a weekly meme hosted here @ Mom With a Reading Problem during the month of December to celebrate Christmas and the holiday season. Each week a different topic centered around the holidays will be discussed.
Merry Monday y’all! Only 20 days to Christmas! I thought it would be fun if this week we talked about traditions, hence this week’s topic “Favorite Family Holiday Tradition.” I’ll be honest we don’t really have one, unless you count creating our own Christmas and opening presents a week early 😉 Seriously, living away from home, we have done this the last three years. I’m looking forward to actually celebrating Christmas on Christmas Day this year. That being said as I thought about this week’s topic, I realized we do have a few fun traditions we do every year. I’m not going to pick a favorite though.
Family Traditions
Hallmark Ornaments: This particular tradition started when I was a baby. My godmother wanted to give me an ornament every year and after the obligatory 1st Christmas and the countdown 1-5 ornaments, she started buying the Puppy Love ornaments (this is its 26th year). After she passed, my mom kept buying them for me and now we decorate our tree with them and I buy them for my son. My husband and I wanted to start buying a series when we got married and did. Now we have about 4 series that we buy every year. I look forward to seeing what the new ornaments will be each year and adding to our collection.
Baking Cookies: Every Christmas Eve, my son and I bake chocolate chip cookies for Santa. It’s tradition and we leave out a few with a glass of milk for Santa (aka Daddy). He loves helping me in the kitchen and I love spending the time with him.
DIY Gifts: I love to craft and so does my son. Last year we made salt-dough ornaments. This year we are making the no-bake cinnamon ornaments. Little man also wants to make some ornaments and I have a few ideas for that 😀
Advent: This is the first year we have followed the advent season. I think it’s special as it reminds us the reason for the season and of course little man likes the countdown. I think this will be a permanent part of our tradition going forward.
What fun traditions! Now that I think about it, my husband and I don’t really have any traditions together, except for who we visit on what days and when his family comes over for dinner. We do open gifts together as soon as we wake up on Christmas morning, though. Since we don’t have room for a tree, we don’t really collect any ornaments, but maybe someday!
