TTT #169 – Childhood Favorites

Happy Tuesday y’all and welcome to a special Children’s Corner edition of the Top Ten! Today’s topic is “Childhood Favorites.” I devoured books as a kid. Pretty much anything I could get my hands on, I read…including my grandmother’s Harlequin novels. I’m pretty sure she’d died of embarrassment if she knew what was in those books she let her tween granddaughter read 😂 Below is a list of my favorite childhood reads, the ones I still read and a few I’ve read to my own son in no particular order. The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis: Technically this is a set of 7 books, but I can’t list just one. This series is one of my all-time favorites. I’ve read it countless times, and at least twice to my son. I love the adventures of the Pevensie children. And who can forget Mr. Tumnus? Or Aslan?! 

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum: Another series…this time 14 books 😉 and all of them deserve a spot on this list. Obviously the first book is my favorite, but I love returning to Oz and learning more about this fantastical world Baum created. It’s a fun read together series, one that my little man and I have read all the way through once and read one or two books here and there. 

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll: Wonderland holds a special place in my memories. The first time I ever read this book I was only 8 or 9 and it was an abridged, young reader novel. I loved it! I went on a year or so later and borrowed the original from the library. Still loved it! There is just something about the nonsense world of Wonderland that is timeless. It’s probably why I love all the adaptations!

Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie: Growing up Peter Pan was my all-time favorite Disney movie. I loved it so much that when I was old enough to read on my own, I borrowed the book from the library. The rest as they say is history. Peter, Wendy, Tink, Captain Hook, even Smee hold a place in my heart. I can tell you all about their adventures and what I was doing when I read them. Little man loved it when we read it a few years ago, I’m hoping now that he is a little older he will still enjoy the stories of the boy who never grew up. 

The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter: I love all of Potter’s stories! That naughty Peter Rabbit stealing vegetables from the garden will always be my favorite.

Amelia Bedelia by Peggy Parish: This book challenged me to expand my vocabulary and read as a child. The silly antics and rhymes had me full-on giggling. I love Amelia Bedelia! So does my little man who found a copy of my book under the bed at my mom’s house earlier this year. And y’all!!!! I didn’t realize her nephew has continued with new chapter books. I’m going to have to read one for old time’s sake ☺️

Goosebumps by R.L. Stine: My first venture into horror and scary stories were these books. I read them all….at least all the ones my school’s library had. I can remember coming home from school on checkout days and sitting down and reading the entire book before bedtime. And then begging my teacher to let me go to the library the next day and exchange for another one.  

Sideways Stories from Wayside School by Louis Sachar: My third grade teacher read this series to us. We read one or two chapters a day as a whole class. It was one of those times that we were all focused and listening, laughing at the funny parts and riveted at the suspenseful ones. I recently purchased the complete set for my son. He is entering third grade this year and I think this will be something fun we can read together.

Redwall by Brian Jacques: I read the first book of this series when I was in the 5th grade. I went on to read all the books that were released up til around 9th grade. Then I stopped, but that was mostly because I grew out of this middle grade series. Now that I’m an adult, I want to go back and read about the brave mice of Redwall abbey again. Martin the Warrior and Marlfox….Mattimeo and the Mossflower….y’all it’s time I revisited the series that introduced me to medieval fantasy!

Bunnicula by Deborah and James Howe: Y’all….of course I read this. Have you seen what other books I enjoy? Of course I loved the book about a vampire bunny who sucked the juice out of vegetables told from the perspective of the farmer’s dog. Y’all I loved this series so much that I begged to get a copy of not just the first book, but the entire series 😂 And bless my parents, they got me the boxed set (which at the time, the series only went through book 4) for my birthday…or maybe Christmas….I can’t remember. It’s been a few years 🤪
