In this shocking finale to the bestselling series that began with Stalking Jack the Ripper, Audrey Rose and Thomas are on the hunt for the depraved, elusive killer known as the White City Devil.
A deadly game of cat-and-mouse has them fighting to stay one step ahead of the brilliant serial killer -- or see their fateful romance cut short by unspeakable tragedy.
Audrey Rose Wadsworth and Thomas Cresswell have landed in America, a bold, brash land unlike the genteel streets of London. But like London, the city of Chicago hides its dark secrets well. When the two attend the spectacular World's Fair, they find the once-in-a-lifetime event tainted with reports of missing people and unsolved murders.
Determined to help, Audrey Rose and Thomas begin their investigations, only to find themselves facing a serial killer unlike any they've encountered before. Identifying him is one thing, but capturing him---and getting dangerously lost in the infamous Murder Hotel he constructed as a terrifying torture device---is another.
Will Audrey Rose and Thomas see their last mystery to the end---together and in love---or will their fortunes finally run out when their most depraved adversary makes one final, devastating kill?
Capturing the Devil by Kerri Maniscalco is the thrilling conclusion to her series Stalking Jack the Ripper. I spent this fall reading the series, and I could not wait to read this final book. After an almost 15 week wait 🫣 at the library, I was finally able to listen to it. It did not disappoint! Picking up a few months after the events of Escaping From Houdini, we find Audrey Rose Wadsworth and Thomas Cresswell eagerly awaiting the arrival of Audrey Rose’s father from England. Not only is a courtship in their future, but they are ready and willing to wed. All they need is her father’s blessing. While waiting, a crime occurs that pulls Audrey Rose, Thomas, and her uncle into the dark underbelly of New York City where a murderer is leaving bodies with markings eerily similar to Jack the Ripper. With her mind torn between her upcoming wedding and memories of her brother, Audrey Rose is determined to solve this case once and for all….or die trying.
Where do I even begin?! This book is like two books in one. The first half taking place in New York City, glamorous and exciting with romance in the air. The second half finding our crime solving duo in Chicago during the World’s Fair heartbroken and just a tiny bit scared. I listened to this book in two sittings too, stopping when the pair traveled to Chicago from New York. It is fast paced and full of suspense, just as we’ve come to expect from this series.
Audrey Rose has come almost full circle from the girl we met in Stalking Jack the Ripper. Her life isn’t what she thought it would be, but with Thomas it is everything she wanted. He gives her the independence she craves while supporting her hopes and dreams. This new case is messing with her mind, and the longer they investigate, the more she suspects that is the idea.
Thomas is as sweet and quirky as he was in book one. That being said, he has also learned to open himself up to Audrey Rose, letting the emotions he normally keeps locked away show. After nearly losing her in the last book, he has no intentions of ever letting her go again. Despite their young age, both are in agreement they are ready to wed. The only obstacle to this is his father.
Overall, Capturing the Devil is a fantastic read! It ties up loose ends from the previous books in the series, while also bringing the characters full circle, forcing them to face their fears, and seeing how they do so together. I love Audrey Rose and Thomas. They are the equivalent of Watson and Holmes. Their banter and how they work a case together make the book. If you are a fan of historical fiction, romance, and thrillers, I highly recommend, though I would note that you do need to read the series in order to enjoy 🙂
I’m glad it was a hit for you. I’ll have to take a closer look but I’m a start at the beginning of a series kind of person.

This is definitely one that needs to be started from the beginning, even though it could technically be read as a standalone. I feel you’d get so much more out of the characters if read from the beginning. The whole series is great!
I really need to read this series! So glad to hear the ending lived up to the rest of it. Great review!

Oh no, you wrote such a great review and now I want to add this series to my TBR. As if I didn’t have enough series to read! It sounds amazing, tbh, and I’ll just have to fit the whole series in, somehow…
