From #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout comes book three in her beloved Flesh and Fire series…
The only thing that can save the realms now is the one thing more powerful than the Fates.
After a startling betrayal ends with both Sera and the dangerously seductive ruler of the Shadowlands she has fallen madly in love with being held captive by the false King of the Gods, there is only one thing that can free Nyktos and prevent the forces of the Shadowlands from invading Dalos and igniting a War of Primals.
Convincing Kolis won’t be easy, though – not even with a lifetime of training. While his most favored Revenant is insistent that she is nothing more than a lie, Kolis’s erratic nature and twisted sense of honor leave her shaken to the core, and nothing could’ve prepared her for the cruelty of his Court or the shocking truths revealed. The revelations not only upend what she has understood about her duty and the very creation of the realms but also draw into question exactly what the true threat is. However, surviving Kolis is only one part of the battle. The Ascension is upon her, and Sera is out of time.
But Nyktos will do anything to keep Sera alive and give her the life she deserves. He’ll even risk the utter destruction of the realms, and that’s exactly what will happen if he doesn’t Ascend as the Primal of Life. Yet despite his desperate determination, their destinies may be out of their hands.
But there is that foreseen unexpected thread—the unpredictable, unknown, and unwritten. The only thing more powerful than the Fates…
Last year, I slowly worked my way through both the Blood and Ash and Flesh and Fire, and by slowly, I mean I binged them all in June 😅 I didn’t have a chance to pick this one up until the holidays, and I could not wait to dive in. I love Nyktos and Sera, I think I love them more than Casteel and Poppy if I’m being completely honest. A Fire in the Flesh by Jennifer L Armentrout is the third installment of the Flesh and Fire series which is a prequel to Blood and Ash. I made a decision when I started this one that I wouldn’t devour it like I did the rest of the series. So I skipped the audiobook (even though I preordered it) and read it slowly at my own pace over the holiday. I think I dragged it out over a week….maybe.
This book picks up right where A Light in the Flame left off. Sera is in the hands of Kolis, and she is seeing a wolf in the distance. The wolf, no surprise, turns out to be Nyktos there to rescue her and demand her release. Needless to say, this does not go over well, and we see one hell of a fight during the first few chapters. Unfortunately, Kolis wins which leaves Nyktos and Sera his prisoners.
Sera’s predicament is dark and will leave some readers feeling just as vulnerable as she is, and I don’t say that lightly. Read the trigger warnings at the beginning of this book and if you are sensitive to any, I highly recommend finding a buddy to read with that can let you know when your trigger is coming and maybe give you the page numbers, percentages, or minutes to skip. Brutality, murder, rape, sexual assault, depression, and talks of suicide are all on the page either happening to our main characters or being witnessed by them to side characters. Know your triggers before reading.
Now back to Sera. Sera is Kolis’s prisoner, and he keeps her in a gilded cage just as Aios described in a previous book. She is notably scared, but doesn’t allow her fear to show. Instead, she focuses on the mission that she’s been training for her entire life: kill Kolis, return order and stop the rot in her kingdom. And if she can save herself and Nyktos in the process even better. However, Sera is even closer to her ascension than before, and she knows this is the end of the line for her. Her only goal becomes saving the man she loves and killing the man holding her captive.
This is not a fast-paced read like the other books in the series. The plot is more character focused and zoomed in on what is currently happening to Sera. In fact, the majority of the book is set in her gilded cage as she witnesses and becomes the target of Kolis’s cruelty. While it may not be fast-paced in the action-packed sense, it still moves at a steady rate, and you will not want to step away from it.
Overall, I really enjoyed A Fire in the Flesh. I felt it gave us, the readers, a chance to know Sera better and understand her motives. The only thing that could have benefited the story is if we had some POV from Nyktos or even Kolis. If you are a fan of the series or a lover of fantasy romance, I highly recommend it.
Yep, these books are definitely addictive and hard to put down.

They really are. I’ve both read and listened to them. If you like audiobooks, the narrator is great!
I love JLA. I read the first one, and of course was hooked, but then haven’t gotten around and now I’m so far behind! I”ve got to get back going on the series. Great review!
