Guest Post: What’s Your Five (Paranormal Romance)

A few years ago I was asked by a friend of mine “What five books (excluding the Bible) do you think everyone should read?” I decided to give the question a spin and a few of my blogging buddies are giving me their five reads in their favorite genres. Up today is Lexxie from (Un)Conventional Bookviews and her favorite genre Paranormal Romance.

I have been a fan of paranormal romance for several years now, and there are just so many things to love when it comes to all things paranormal – especially when there is love in the air as well. More often than not, we have female characters that can do it on their own – all of it, they can fight their own fights, they have the means to take care of themselves financially, they have friends at their backs. They don’t ‘need’ a man in their lives – that is fully a choice, too. And that makes the wooing oh so sweet.

Choosing only five that I think people really should read was really hard, because there are a lot of PNR I really love, so I have kind of cheated a little bit and gone with series – five PNR series you should definitely pick up if you like some hotness, lots of action and female characters who can do it all on their own, but choose not to :

The Hollows series by Kim Harrison – there are witches, vampires, weres, fey, pixies… and it’s extremely well done! The whole series is out, so it’s one of those you can binge-read…

The Psy-Changeling series by Nalini Singh. This is set in the future, and there are weres (changelings) and psy – who have different kinds of powers they use their minds for. There are already 14 books out in the series, and there are more coming out. There is an overall story-arc, but I’m pretty sure this is one that could be read out of order.

The Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost. More ‘classic’ paranormal, which starts with a female vampire hunter on the prowl. There are mostly vampires in this series, but there are ghouls, witches and other creatures as well.

Downside Ghosts series by Stacia Kane. This is very dark and gritty, where the main female character – who is a witch – is also a drug addict. And she may not always follow the rules. And she gets into trouble a lot. But I love the unconventional characters and storylines in this one.

The Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews. Delicious. Dangerous. Action-filled. Lots of very hot romantic moments. Character-driven. Did I say amazing?

And I’m sorry, but I have to give honourable mentions to two more series which are much less known, but that I love very much anyway : Spellcrackers.com by Suzanne McLeod and Cin Craven by Jenna MacLaine.

I could have mentioned many, many more, this was very hard, and a bit sad to leave several of my favorite PNR series out. If you want to check what else I like, you can stalk my Goodreads shelf Paranormal-Adult.

  1. I love The Hollows series and Spellcrackers.com – I have only read one of the Psy-Changeling series and after this article I’ll track down more of these books. Thank you for a really enjoyable blog.
