The summer was supposed to be fun, teaching camp, steamy time, and being together. Edgar, on the other hand, has other ideas about how they should spend their time. Enter, the tutors. How will Avalon come to terms living with Lusk Mirren when they can't even talk to each other like adults? Will he ever be a full member of her Fold?
I really, really wanted to like Spearwood Book 2 by A.S. Oren but it was just okay for me. I LOVED the original series, and when the author decided to revamp and rebrand it, I was excited. However it really isn’t anything like the original, which to be fair the author warned us it wouldn’t be. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still good, just not my typical read.
It’s been four years since the events of Book 1.5, and Avalon and the boys are at Edgar’s teaching in the camp they grew up in. Avalon is thriving, she’s graduated from Spearwood Academy and will be returning for college in the fall. However the magic performed on her during the first book still affects her change and (in my opinion) she’s become addicted to the euphoria and relief she gets from sleeping with one of the guys.
With Avalon’s half-breed nature (half angel, half dragon), Edgar wants her to train in all the elements and arranges tutors to train her and her twin. The book really revolves around this training which brings her closer to Bullock and Lusk. Dante is noticeably absent during a majority of the book and to be honest that’s ok because there are plenty of guys that take up the slack. This is the first reverse harem book I’ve ever read, and honestly I’m still trying to figure it out. It’s like Avalon can’t decide who she loves so she just says she loves them all and sleeps with all of them, living out a fantasy with each. Honestly not my cup of tea, but I enjoy the characters and the storyline so I’ll stick with it.
Why 3.5‘s? Well this particular installment, like 1.5, felt like a bridge to the next book. While I loved the characters and skimmed/skipped the sex scenes (which warning there’s a LOT), there was little movement forward. There was character development but the plot seemed stalled to me. I’m hoping for more of the fantasy/action element from the original series in Book 2.5. If you’re a fan of Spearwood, grab a copy because you don’t want to miss it. If you’re new to the series, enjoy urban fantasy and paranormal romance, I highly suggest you start with Book 1.
