The Edge lies between worlds, on the border between the Broken, where people shop at Walmart and magic is a fairytale–and the Weird, where blueblood aristocrats rule, changelings roam, and the strength of your magic can change your destiny…
Cerise Mar and her unruly clan are cash poor but land rich, claiming a large swathe of the Mire, the Edge swamplands between the state of Louisiana and the Weird. When her parents vanish, her clan’s long-time rivals are suspect number one.
But all is not as it seems. Two nations of the Weird are waging a cold war fought by feint and espionage, and their conflict is about to spill over into the Edge—and Cerise’s life . William, a changeling soldier who left behind the politics of the Weird, has been forced back into service to track down a rival nation’s spymaster.
When William’s and Cerise’s missions lead them to cross paths, sparks fly—but they’ll have to work together if they want to succeed…and survive.
Bayou Moon is the second installment in The Edge series by Ilona Andrews which follows a wolf shifter and a woman who lives in the swamplands of the Edge. Cerise Mar and her family have been at war with their neighbors for as long as anyone can remember. When her parents go missing, Cerise is convinced she knows the culprit that is until William shows up.
William was introduced in the first book of the series. He’s a wolf shifter and blue blood from the Weird. He left his life in the Weird behind, settling in the Broken as a construction worker. When a representative of the Mirror arrives with evidence that his nemesis is back to killing changeling children, William agrees to help. He goes undercover in the Mire of Louisiana and encounters Cerise who unknowingly is hunting the same person.
I liked them together. William is a bit odd. He’s a recluse, enjoys all things comic books, and thinks as a predator would. His thinking is black and white, with no gray which can make it tough to understand his thought process at times. Cerise, on the other hand, has spent her life in poverty. She’s been raised with thick skin and uses sarcasm as a shield which inevitably leads to some miscommunication with William.
The plot revolves around her missing parents and Spider, the man responsible for the changeling murders. Somehow the two are connected, and it is up to William to figure it out. I liked how this played out. Andrews really expanded the world of the Weird and Edge incorporating new paranormal creatures and scientific monstrosities. It is action-packed and face-paced.
Overall, I thought this one was ok. I did opt to listen to the audiobook, and I think that is why my enjoyment was less this time. The narrator is good, but her Southern accent drew me out of the story. I had a hard time appreciating what was happening in the story for criticizing the fake drawl. If you are a fan of paranormal/urban fantasy, I’d give this one a chance….just maybe not the audiobook 😅

Join us March 21st for Fate’s Edge.
OK. I read these initially as ebooks. I haven’t been an avid fan of Raudman, although I often prefer reading by audio. I thought the “body horror” was going to be an issue for some people. Anyway, I love William and Cerise and am glad they found someone for them. Don’t forget to share your review and enter for prizes!

I really enjoyed this story. I liked William and Cerise more than Declan and Rose. I’m so excited to do this read-along.
